Breakfast, Cafe, and Spooky Stroll 🐈
This one is for our city and all of those who call it home. You’ll embrace culture while catching the tastiest breakfast in all of Atlanta. Then, you'll support our furry friends and follow clues through a cemetery on a haunted hunt. Spooks! Part of this plan requires a reservation, so feel free to mix and match!
Rise and shine! It’s time for Atlanta’s best breakfast at Ria’s Bluebird. But we can’t talk about the food without paying tribute to the woman who opened Ria’s, Ria Pell.
Known as the “gay mayor” of Atlanta, Ria Pell was a big part of Atlanta’s restaurant scene, a beloved and influential member of the LGBTQ community, and a part of the punk scene. She won Georgia Voice’s Best Chef in 2011 and 2013 as well as Food Network’s Chopped in 2013. She was a very special person in our community and touched many people’s lives with positivity. Our Ria’s insider, Hunter Sisler, considers Ria one of the most influential people of his college years.
In 2000, Ria revamped an old, rundown liquor store, and opened the doors to Ria’s Bluebird, paving the way for the dining scene that exists on Memorial Drive today. Hunter says “it was fitting, because she would take something most people would overlook or judge and turn it into a work of art.”
Hunter describes the cuisine as “as ‘Atlanta’ as it gets, by being the perfect fusion of Southern, Punk, and Progressive. There are not many places with as much soul as Bluebird.” Ria’s Bluebird continues to operate under Steven and Julie Gannon and serves what is described by the New York Times as the “world’s best pancakes,” breakfast classics, and unique sandwiches with vegan and vegetarian options. There’s nothing you can do wrong at Rias. “She gave us the best taste of Atlanta, simply put.”
With breakfast this good, please plan accordingly for wait and parking time and arrive early. If you get a spot in the parking lot, you’re lucky! If not, street parking is available.

Your next stop is just a short walk over to Java Cats Cafe. This is Georgia’s first cat cafe, where you will be buried in the love, energy, and playfulness of 15-20 adoptable shelter cats and sip fresh ground coffee from Firelight Coffee Roasters. Here, the goal is “to bring the citizens of Atlanta joy through the love of an adoptable cat and exceptional coffee served in a cozy environment, creating a sense of community for people of all ages to enjoy.”
Not only do we agree that this “is one of the most magical places you will experience,” but we also love that part of the proceeds goes towards taking care of shelter cats. So grab a coffee and spend an hour showing love to these amazing animals. Don’t worry, they are COVID friendly, limiting the number of guests in the playroom and sanitizing all surfaces throughout your visit. The cost of admission is $15 and includes any drink, an hour in the cat lounge, a good deed, and lots of cat love.
The Oakland Cemetery is one of Atlanta’s oldest public parks and a very popular destination. Every year over 100,000 visitors come for peaceful strolls, pumpkin patches, rare plant markets, history tours, and especially the festivities during the month of October. We told you you’re not missing any of the spooky happenings!
This entire month Oakland Cemetery is holding a self-guided scavenger hunt where you will follow cryptic clues to solve riddles! Grab a buddy who’s good at those, but if not, don’t worry. There are three levels of difficulty, easy (1 hour), medium (1.5-2 hours), and deadly (2-3 hours).
The Haunted Hunt packets are $25 and include a $5 self-guided tour map which can be used for future visits, which we will surely be sending you on. And of course, the proceeds go towards maintaining this historic public space.
No reservations are required. The cemetery is open from dawn to dusk. However, be mindful of October 14-17, 21-25, and 28-31, when they will close at 4:00 pm for a special event. The main entrance is located at Oakland Ave and MLK Jr Dr. SE, with a second entrance across from Six Feet Under. There is also a small parking lot across from the main entrance.
